Augmented reality is the overlapping of different levels of contextual information (virtual and multimedia elements, geo-localized data, and so on) onto real, everyday experience. Rather than the immaterial bits of old, these bits mesh with our everyday world, as information becomes geo-localised. Given the interesting and yet to be fully explored aspects of this new frontier in communications, many artists are experimenting with the potential unlocked by the widespread use of smartphones. The main application for this technology lies in providing information strictly correlated to the user’s actual location.

Layar is the leading app for the production of this sort of content. During the Share Festival, Sander Veenhof will be holding a two-day workshop in which he presents the expressive potential of this medium, producing together with students an augmented reality application. Bruce Sterling, who recently managed to come through an augmented reality course at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena unscathed, will peer into issue, adding an unconventional perspective to the discussion.
