Art and the Future City- Alan N. Shapiro

11th nov – 5.30PM – Regional Museum of Natural Science

What is the role of art in the social transition towards the future city? What is the role of open source in the “open city”? He will talk about the Situationists, and about how their ideas are being revived today in the new academic field of Social Choreography. What he think is very interesting about the Situationists are their ideas and practices in architecture and urbanism, and their ideas and practices of “wandering in the city” and “diversion of technology” (le dérive and le détournement). He will also discuss some ideas about art, architecture, technology and the future city of Thérèse Tierney.

If we examine how the availabilty of digital technology and “information everywhere” is starting to shape the future city, the ways in which digital space is influencing the design and development of urban space, then we will grasp that arriving at clear “successor concepts” and “successor practices” to open-source and freeware is a very critical task. The same is true for the disappearance and possible reconstruction of what has previously been called the “public sphere” and “private life”. We must, at the same time, embrace the ubiquity of available information in the future city that technology affords, and return to the Situationist idea of transforming the city into a ludic playground. Transportation systems most become much more fluid in the mobility that they offer. Social networks must get integrated and embedded into the offline physical world, contributing to a responsive environment. Art must be an integral part of the future city.
