OPENING SHARE FESTIVAL
March 19th, 6:30 pm
Temporary Museum, Via Verona 15/c
This year the Share Festival is celebrating its tenth season.A special season, held in the new year to mark a change of course, a need for fresh air.
The main venue for the exhibition this year will be the Temporary Museum, a project sponsored jointly by the Department for Cultural Affairs of the Regione Piemonte and BasicNet Group.
Other venues include Casa Jasmina at the FabLab, Bunker and the Amantes cultural club.
The festival was launched at a time when digital technologies began to permeate our society.
Since then much has happened, from the massive spread of smartphones, which have brought the digital world into our hands, to the revelations of Edward Snowden, which have thrust to the forefront of public debate the issues of privacy and surveillance—issues explored critically by various artists and media theorists involved in the festival.
This year’s festival brings to a close a first stage, whose objective was to bring the best of digital art to Turin and to shine a light, for national and international audiences, on the various themes that have defined our culture over the last decade.
It all began in 2005 with Wave.it, showcasing Italian digital art. Then in 2006 the focus turned to the Limitless, which looked at technologies designed to overcome the constraints of space and time. In 2007, Digital Affinity explored the synergy of intentions created by social networks. ManufacTuring, in 2008 looked at the new materiality of digital art. In 2009, Market Forces explored how the market has become the privileged arena of battle for ideas and products of all kinds. In 2010, Smart Mistakes focused on the creative power of error. Cops & Robbers, in 2011, looked at the fine line that separates the legal and illegal when it comes to freedom of speech. In 2012 it was the turn of Open Your City, dedicated to open-source technologies in the urban world. In 2013, Real Time / Real Space spotlighted the new spatial-temporal relationships that ubiquitous technology has triggered. All of which now brings us to Autonomous.
Humans are surrounded by a distributed intelligence that tracks, profiles and assists us, seeking to pre-empt, analyze and bring about our dreams and desires and forming a complex, autonomous system.
Software assistants, drones, cars that drive themselves and bots for high-frequency trading. As computing becomes more and more distributed, humans are no longer the only agents of analysis and action.
Where does the growth in potential stop and a technological circuit begin, in which our choices are increasingly driven by “emergent” considerations that act autonomously?
Are we becoming a “black box society”, in which we seek to make the world “a better place” through the use of algorithms?
Two sides of same coin… here’s hoping the Share Festival can shed some light on both!
Enjoy the Festival!
