This year over 250 artists submitted entries for the prize, now in its seventh season. Six works have been short-listed by the judges Jasmina Tesanovic, Bruce Sterling, Simone Arcagni and Luca Barbeni, and will be on show from 30th October to 9th November, 2013 at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin.

28 of Equizzi Mariano invades the city with a narrative cyber noir. This story, which is satirical, cruel and absurd, uses Turin as a stage where the characters and the readers share the same space. 28 is a story accessible only by following the path of the real characters on the screen of a smartphone trough a browser for data in augmented reality.

The work of Lauren McCarthy, Social Turkers shows extreme consequences of job insecurity/labor flexibility and instant communication: two factors that characterize the lives of young people. The immediacy of communication typical of social networks has created a control/communication space where real choices in real life are influenced by the suggestions of the so-called “crowd” , constituted by workers paid via Amazon Mechanical Turk.

Activists of Nika Oblak and Primoz Novak critically addresses the problem of the delegation, and makes sure that robots replace humans in yet another context, the protest. Mechanical robots move independently within a defined area, expressing opinions in the place of mankind. Can we humans still act to create change?

In the era of the dictatorship of “touch “, Base 8 by Christine Sugrue creates an immaterial ecosystem that interacts with the spaces between our fingers and our hands. Using an old theatrical trick, it poetically demonstrates how our information systems could be a house of mirrors instead of a house of glass.

Through the work Apotheosis of Glasgow High-Rises Myriam Thyes visually inverts the space and the architectural movement of the town: Victorian buildings are in a grid of streets full of cars and buses. Skyscrapers dominate the landscape to the suburbs, in an urban motorway noise without end. Film, photography, collage and sound require the viewer to see the city with new eyes.

The kinetic installation by Nils Völker, 1/2 Eighty Eight, represents an incessant flow, trough an analog process presented in a “digital” matrix. Black plastic bags are the pixels of an animated screen. The precise movement transforms the black bags in sinuous waves. This kinetic matrix, which seems to breathe, establishes a relationship with the viewer similar to the one that occurs in nature, leading him to reflect on life and its processes.

The six finalists are Lauren McCarthy, Komplex, Nika Oblak & Primoz Novak, Christine Sugrue, Myriam Thyes, and Nils Völker.

The jury has declared the winner of the 7th Share Prize to be ½ Eighty Eight by Nils Völker. “It is a contemplative delight to see such precise elegance of motion carried out by humble black garbage bags. With its critical mixture of urban infrastructure and organic life, this expressive sculpture realizes concepts of time and space.”

The honourable mention is awarded to Lauren McCarthy for Social Turkers, “for her creation of an interactive drama on the theme of contemporary relationships. It critically addresses the dynamic action of network communication within real time and real spaces. This process, an online economic model put into a real place, shows the urgency of our need to confront the changes brought by social media.”
